Blind Date: Tiresome retread of all-too familiar farcical material by Blake Edwards. Yuppie Willis takes Basinger out on a pre arranged blind date, urged that she shouldn’t have alcohol and instantly gives her champagne. This film is hilarious. This was Willis’ featuring debut; guitarist Stanley Jordan makes a lyrical appearance. Cast includes Kim Basinger, Bruce Willis, John Larroquette, William Daniels, and Graham Stark. Wall-E: This is an animation sci-fi comedy adventure. Wall-E is a robot left on Earth for 100’s of years, since the planet became uninhabitable. He just goes on cleaning the planet, as he was designed to do. When a search robot named Eve arrives, his whole reason for existing changes.
Nuts: Gripping drama in regards to a belligerent female designated an appointed attorney who should fight for her right to stand trial for manslaughter, while both the state and her own parents demand that she’s not in her right mind. Cast includes Barbra Streisand, Richard Dreyfuss, Maureen Stapleton, Eli Wallach, Robert Webber, and Hayley Taylor Block. (116 minutes, 1987)
Jack’s Back: Umpteenth retelling of the Jack The Ripper legend is updated to modern day L.A. where youthful physician Spader is the #1 suspect. Prostitutes are slaughtered in grisly style one hundred years to the night after Bloody Jack’s legendary offenses. The twist midway through is preposterous. Cast includes James Spader, Cynthia Gibb, Pole Loomis, Rex Ryon, Robert Picardo, Chris Mulkey, and Dauitza Kingsley. (97 minutes, 1988)
Malcolm X: This movie chronicles the life African America leader Malcolm X. He was a controversial leader of the black movement in the 1950’s and 1960’s. He became a Muslim, and then a Muslim leader. He was eventually assassinated in New York in 1965.
The Hills Have Eyes: Common American family on a camping trip is pestered by brute, cannibalistic mutants. The film is above better than most like it, with compact direction and lots of entertaining twists and turns. An Incredibly gory film that has possessed a cult following. Cast includes Susan Lanier, Robert Houston, Virginia Vincent, Russ Mourn, Dee Wallace, Martin Speer, and Michael Berryman. (89 minutes, 1977)
Ruby Gentry: Turgid, strolling account of a simple Southerner (Jones) wedding the wealthy Malden to spite Heston, the guy she really loves. Cast includes Jennifer Jones, Charlton Heston, Karl Malden, and Josephine Hutchinson. (82 minutes, 1952)
The Great Race: Long, occasionally ludicrous, often labored comedy, not the best ever made as promoted. Fight pattern and barroom fight are highlights, although the pie scene falls flat, and other gimmicks don’t work. This is absolutely a mixed bag, some parts good and some bad. Cast includes Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk, Keenan Wynn, Larry Storch, and George Macready. (150 minutes, 1965)
Iron Will: Kid enters a Winnipeg-to-St. Paul dog-sled race in the WW1 era. The outcome is so predictable that you nearly anticipate everything that will happen from to start to finish. Cast includes Mackenzie Astin, Kevin Spacey, August Schellenberg, David Ogden Stiers, Brian Cox, George Gerdes, and John Terry. (109 minutes, 1994)
