Post Stroke Therapy
It has been found from the studies that stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in the United States and third in the leading causes of death. There are usually three treatment stages for stroke. They are prevention, therapy soon after stroke and post stroke rehabilitation.
Medication for first stroke entirely depends on treating the person’s underlying risk factors for stroke such as diabetes or hypertension. Acute stroke therapies prevents a stroke while it is happening by quickly dissolving a blood clot causing the stroke. The post stroke rehabilitation purpose is to overcome disabilities which is a consequence of stroke damage.
Drug medication is the most common therapy for stroke. The most common drugs used to prevent stroke are Antithrombotics and thrombolytics. Antithrombotics prevents the occurrence of blood clots that can be lodged in a cerebral artery and cause strokes. Thrombolytic drugs can be used to cure acute ischemic stroke that is caused by the blockage of artery.
Surgery is also the common way of treating the stroke. The two most popular kind of surgery includes carotid endarterectomy and extracranial/intracranial (EC/IC) bypass. In Carotid endarterectomy, the surgeon generally takes out the fatty deposits from the inside of one of the carotid arteries, that is present in the neck and is the chief blood supplier to the brain. EC/IC bypass is a type of surgical process which restores the flow of the blood to a blood deprived area of brain tissue by rerouting a healthy artery to the area of brain tissue affected by a blocked artery. These EC/IC bypass surgery is performed very rarely as it is not very beneficial.
Rehabilitation is the most widespread medication for post stroke. Rehabilitation process helps the stroke patient relearn everyday activities such as eating, drinking, dressing, bathing, reading, writing plus cooking.
Stroke rehabilitation helps the stroke patient to regain their independence by improving skills which has been lost due to stroke. Small improvements over time can add up to huge improvements.
