We may already have a nice garden or a paved driveway but there is more that we can can achieve with these parts of our homes even more appealing. What we must understand is that the appeal of a certain part in our homes does not merely rely on ornamental pieces; or a well-balanced interior.

It also relies on how organized the surroundings are; how well-balanced everything is and basically; how smart it looks.

To place a bit of order into the outdoors of our homes, we should consider installing concrete curbing.

WHAT IS CONCRETE CURBING?

Concrete curbing has become an essential part in landscaping as more homeowners realizing the importance of having a beautifully-landscaped yard. What concrete curbing does is to make a decorative boundary between flowers beds; between trees and grass; and likewise give a nice outline for the driveway.

While we may not have considered concrete curbing in the past, we should think about it now as the visible change in the appearance of the exteriors of our homes is truly remarkable.

It will also make it simpler for us to keep each section of the gardens and driveways clean.

There are many other ways for us to use concrete curbing to our homes other than gardens and driveways. For example, we can use this technique to border fish ponds, if we have one in the yard; and border trees in our front walks.

LAYING CONCRETE CURBING

Since this is a fairly small project, we can do this ourselves. It doesn’t matter if we have not done this before as there are easily available guidelines and directions that we can find online.

A few basic rules that we can start on are determining the dimensions of the section that we will be applying concrete curbing; and making a concrete mold. Naturally, we have to measure the space where the concrete curbing will be put so we can determine the amount of the materials that we will need. This will also give us the accurate numbers as to the measurements and form of the concrete mold that we will make.

Another thing that we must be careful about concerning our concrete mold is that its dimensions should be just the right proportion for us to be able to handle it easily.

Robert Devalt is quite interested in paving and writes about concrete curbing businesses and many other things on his site. If you want to know something about paving, you should take a minute with Robert.

A garden shed is normally a small structure like house which is constructed outside the main house to keep all the different apparatus which are all needed for gardening. Normally garden sheds are quiet a talk among the individuals who take gardening as an interest and spend a good amount of money on it. These garden sheds look after your gardening devices and hence it is considered to be important elements of gardening.

There are people who find it tough to find out how to build a garden shed, but with little knowledge of carpentry and a good layout plan, you can definitely construct a garden shed.

The area which you choose for building a garden shed should be firm, and must not hold any water. The construction will be easier if the ground is leveled. In case, if the ground is not leveled, then you have to do it plain, as building a ground shed on a rough ground will be very difficult.

As wood are plentiful available at a very considerable price, garden sheds are made from wood. To make garden sheds all you need is pressure treated wooden frames and planks to make walls, joists and trusses for the shed, and substantial blocks to make the floor of your shed.

Garden sheds are definitely the best place to keep all your handy tools required for gardening so that the tools can be protected from the ruthless climate. The garden shed is like storage shed for storing tools and devices.

If you know how to build a garden shed then it will get to save a good amount of money, otherwise you have to buy a ready made garden shed kit or even engage an experienced roofer to build the shed.

Clashing to the normal belief, it should be understood that building a garden shed is very easy, which can be completed over a weekend.

If you don’t already have a shed that you can use, the first step is to choose the garden shed design that best suits your needs. There are many available that come in a variety of materials. For instance, you can choose a wooden storage shed or vinyl storage shed to name a few. You can build a storage shed from scratch by purchasing your own lumber or other materials and searching the internet for blueprints for the design of your choice.

by Ned Dagostino

So your old lawn mower just doesn’t cut it anymore (pun intended) and you’ve decided it’s time for a new one. But how do you go about choosing a lawn mower? Start by knowing exactly what you need.

While there are many factors involved in the decision, start by looking at the big three. Look at the size of your yard, what features you want or need, and the quality of engine you require.

Do you need a riding lawn mower, or is a walk behind mower good enough. Use this rule as a starting point. If your yard is over three-quarters of an acre, then look at riding mowers. If not, a walk behind mower is likely all you need. The walk behind mower is by far the most popular. And if your yard is small, smooth, and doesn’t have a lot of hills, there’s no need to spend extra money on a lot of fancy features. However is your yard is over 1/2 an acre, then one thing you should definitely look at is a self propelled model. These mowers will move forward without any help from you. All you need to do is guide it in the right direction. This make mowing the yard a breeze.

Next you should consider the size of the mower deck and the power of the engine. A wide mower deck means you’ll cut more grass with every pass, and that means fewer trips across and back. If you add on an engine with a little extra torque, then the job is fast and simple. Here’s the key. Match the mower with the yard. If you don’t need a wider deck and more power, don’t pay for it. It would simply be wasting money.

You also need to look at the size of the rear wheels. In most cases, standard wheels are fine. But if you have a rough yard with lots of hills, large rear wheels will make the job easier.

Larger yards, those over 3/4 of an acre, may require a riding mower. Once again you’ll need to choose the deck size and engine power. Only consider higher end options if you will be mowing several acres. You’ll be saving money this way.

If you have lots of trees, shrubs and other landscape features, then consider a zero turn radius mower. With these you can basically cut in a circle without moving or leaving a space in the middle. They’re ideal for going around trees. But if you don’t have much landscaping, then save your money or use it on features you will need.

Whether you are using a riding mower or a walk behind, you’ll also need to decide if you want the mower to mulch. A mulching mower will continually cut the grass into tiny fragments by using specially designed blades. These small particles simply drop back down into the yard where they decompose and become a natural fertilizer. If you don’t mulch, you’ll have to bag and dispose of the clippings. These means having a mower with a bag or raking up the grass when you finish mowing.

Naturally there are plenty of other choices to make. Do you want an electric mower, one with a cord or without? Do you want one of the new solar powered or robotic mowers? Start by answering the basic questions first, then when you head to the dealer or look online, choosing a lawn mower will be a much easier task.

Planting a rose plant goes beyond how deep the hole should be and if plant food should be applied now or later. The first and most fundamental measure in rose planting that should not be overlooked is picking the location of where you are going to plant your roses. It is as true in planting as it is in real estate; location, location, location. There are some matters that need to be studied when choosing a location for our rose plants.

Will the site you care opting to set your roses get enough sunshine? The majority of rose species should get at least 6 hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight a day. Yet rose plants that are shade tolerant call for about four to six hours of direct sunshine to do best.

Is the territory where you plan to plant your roses healthy? Roses are avid eaters and need to have nutritious soil. They do not like soil that has too much clay or too much sand. A clever test you can perform with your soil to find out if it has too much clay or sand is to clump it in your hand. If the soil holds the mold and does not collapse easily, it has too much clay. If the soil collapses too easily and does not hold the mold, it has too much sand. Good soil should maintain the shape in your hand but crumble easily. The soil should also not be too acidic, bear too much limestone or too much chalk.

And lastly, is the site where you are going to plant your rose plant too near to trees or other plants? There are many another trees and other larger plants that will extract water and nutrients from the ground from roots that extend far beyond their drip line. If you see a lot of roots where you are digging your hole for your rose bush, most likely these roots are going to make a problem for your plant. There are some climbing rose and some shrubs that are an exception but most rose plants only like to be mixed with other roses or other non-invasive plants.

Now that you have the perfect position for your rose plant, you can consider the fundamentals such as how deep the hole should be. You will need to dig a hole that is slightly larger than the size of the pot the plant is in or root system of the plant. The depth of the hole depends on the climate that you live in. Colder countries want to plant their roses somewhat deeper. It is a good idea to speak to other rose growers in the area as to which is the proper depth for you. Depths may be different for many different people but, everyone can gain from loosening the soil at the bottom of the hole.

You can also set some compost in the bottom of the hole plus a scatter of bone meal which is a source of Phosphorus and is slow working and advances healthy root development. Spread out the roots slightly after you place the plant into the hole. Fill Again the hole and make sure that the soil settles around the roots. Water the roots before you cover them with the last couple of inches of soil. And finally place the last of the soil back into the hole and firm the soil slightly. You can water the plant at this step also.

by Ned Dagostino

When you think of outdoor lighting you think of floodlights to light up the house and its environs in the night for safety and security. You may also think of decorative lighting for the garden. Then there is highlighting to show off your landscaping or architectural beauty. In all these cases the outdoor lighting involves running wires carrying high voltage to the different light points. You may run the wires underground or overhead. However you run the wiring, you have to be very careful that there is no chance of electrocution. Underground wiring is prone to water infiltration and damage by normal activities like gardening or some sports (cricket, for instance). If the insulation of underground wiring is damaged, high voltage electricity can leak out. Overhead wiring can break in storms and fall to the ground. Fatal accidents can occur to human or animal victims. Electrical short circuits can cause fires to break out, injuring people and damaging property. If you are thinking of rewiring your current outdoor lighting system, or if you are planning to install one for the first time, you should opt for the low voltage solution.

Electrical voltage above a 60 – 70 volt threshold is sensible to humans. Above 100 volts it becomes dangerous. At just 12 volts, low voltage electricity is safe because it cannot cause electrocution. So outdoor lighting systems using low voltage electricity are absolutely safe.

The outdoor lighting system is supplied low voltage electrical power by a transformer that steps down the high voltage of 120 volts from the mains supply to a safe and low 12 volts. Some outdoor lighting systems run on DC which means that they can be run even when the mains fails. Low voltage lamps are available in the market. You can choose incandescent lamps if you like. But incandescent lamps are very energy-hungry. It is better that you go in for high efficiency lamps like the latest LED lamps that have just appeared on the market at affordable rates. LED lamps consume just one-fourth of the electricity consumed by incandescent lamps with a comparable light output.

The installation of a modern outdoor lighting system is quite simple, mainly because lethal voltages are not involved. If you are conversant with electricity and electrical circuits, you can manage the installation yourself in an easy one-day job. You don’t need any kind of special equipment or tools to install the low voltage system – no insulated gloves and no delicate measuring equipment. Be warned, however, that short circuits can still cause fires, so be very careful to use fuses or the modern miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) of appropriate rating at strategic junctures. You can afford to use high quality cable and MCBs because the overall saving you make by implementing this system is much more than the cable cost.

So just how much money can you save with LED lamps? Well consider that they typically use about a quarter of the electricity of standard lamps. That’s a 75% savings every month on your outdoor lighting bill. Figure that out over the course of a year or even ten years, and the numbers become significant. Then when you add in the fact that these bulbs will last at least 10 times longer, the savings get even better. And as an added benefit you won’t be forced to change the bulbs nearly as often. As we all know, outdoor lights always seem to go out when we would least like them to, like when the temperatures are sub-freezing.

The current load for LEDs is so low that you can use light wiring for the low voltage outdoor lighting system. You can use overhead wiring without fear of it causing grievous bodily harm to people or animals. With light overhead wiring it is easy to rearrange the lighting whenever required. This allows you to highlight different parts of the house and grounds for a change. So you can highlight the gazebo one month, and the Spanish columns the next.

Changing your outdoor lighting system to a low voltage outdoor lighting system using LED lamps will be a power and money saving idea. You’ll be contributing to environmental conservation as well by reducing the demand on large power generating stations. The main benefit of a low voltage outdoor lighting system is that you are now completely free from the risk of electrocution accidents. You can watch your children play out there and not have the teeniest fear about them getting a fatal shock. What could be better than that?

by Kor Rassad

The grounds for needing to transplant roses are numerous. It could be because you choose to allow it greater sunlight or it could be that you are just modifying things around a bit in your garden. But, whatever the cause, there are several matters that you will need to recognise before you start plucking your plant out of the ground.

First things first; prepare the land where you are projecting to site your roses. The last thing you want to do is to allow the root ball to be displayed to the hot sun or release any of its moisture. If your plant must move by vehicle to get to its new placement, make certain that you cover the roots with a damp piece of burlap.

A great tip to remember is to water your plant well the day before you plan to move it. Water is the secret of a productive transplant. The fortunes of transplanting a dry, wilting plant successfully are low.

But, if the plant is full of water, the requirements on the roots are small for a spell after the transplant. In all probability you are going to loose some of the roots from transplanting the plant. The roots of a rose plant develop really deep into the soil past the point of a reasonable sum of soil that can be removed. But, with sufficient water drawn by the rest of the plant, your roses have a better chance of survival.

When digging the plant out, take as much of the root ball as you can manage. It is not necessary to crop healthy plant growth from the top structure in order for the plant to survive. The growth of the plant is important in the production of sugars. It only damages the plant to cut its growth away. After the transplant if the plant starts to wilt at its tips its a sign that it is having trouble supporting its top structure. If this happens step-up the amount that you water it and you can prune any tips that do not recover. Its a great idea to give approximately a half to a full cup of bone meal to the hole where the plant will go. You will also want to set the plant slightly higher then it was before because the plant will settle inside the hole. The bud union can be about one or two inches above ground level. Once the plant is watered and has settled, you can press slightly on the plant to eliminate air pockets.

Most rose enthusiasts would concur not transplant roses in the growing season for several reasons. It is smoother to transplant the roses while they are dormant because there is less of a risk of them going into shock since they are not growing. Plus, right after the annual trimming the plant will be smaller and lighter to move around. But, with the correct preparation and a lot of water, anyone can follow the steps listed here and anyone can have glorious, flourishing roses after a transplant during any season.

You may think you know everything there is about sheds in order to make a good decision for your family. While that may be true, the reality is you don’t know everything there is to know. Buying the shed is easy but you better know a few things before you start your storage building search.

Though it makes since to make sure you have the proper space and clearances for the size of shed you want it is a step that is often missed; especially in the height department. You will also need to call your local codes department or your homeowners association to find out if you need a permit to place a shed in your yard.

After you get the legal and practical items out of the way, it is time to start the process of shopping but not buying. I say this because some people get carried away with what they see and get really disappointed by the price or the work that will have to go into such a project. This is the research part. Find the things you like and make a note to come back to it once you have looked at all your options.

If you are dead set on a wooden shed, go look at the hardware store and see if they have the size you want in the price range you want to pay. You may also want to take a moment and find out what kind of maintenance you will be performing on a semi annual basis with a wood building as well. I mention this because people forget that termites are an issue in much of the country and they will eat the wood of your shed just as fast as they will eat any other wood you have laying around. You will also have to paint it to keep it looking as good as when you started.

For a shed that is virtually maintenance free, the vinyl or plastic types are great. These sheds have become more and more popular as time for families has become an issue and as the costs have come down. They have a steel frame and are one of the most durable on the market today and most of them come with multi-year warranties. As with all the sheds, you will need to have a good sturdy and level foundation ready to install this one and they come in kits that are relatively easy to put together.

These plastic sheds have a very good lifespan with little to no maintenance. You can spray it off as little or as much as you want but most people hose it down once or twice a year and that’s it. You will want to make sure it meets the required snow load and wind rating in certain areas of the country but other than that these great little buildings work well.

Also don’t forget to look at metal buildings as an option especially if cost is your main factor. Metal buildings tend to be a bit more flexible in regard to the foundation as well and can be placed right on the ground as long as it is level ground. Most of these sheds do well unless they get scratched or bent since once that metal is penetrated rust can take hold. You will need to watch it and make sure you catch any potential rust spots and treat them accordingly.

It’s really a pretty forward and easy process as long as you start with the size and make sure you have everything you need as far as permits and permission to build or install a storage building from your city or association. Once that is done the rest is just making sure you find the best solution for you and your family.

Solar garden lights help homeowners to safeguard anyone in their garden, whether it is pets, children or the homeowners themselves, from getting an electric shock. Solar garden lights are lights powered by the sunlight. These lights illuminate the need in wiring, helping the homeowners to save on the electric, as well as, such lights are very easy to install.

Solar garden lights produce light with the aid of solar energy, which is the only powerful free of charge natural source of energy on earth. Unique solar cells are capable of generating electric, when exposed to the sun for long enough. A rechargeable battery makes the unit capable of storing the energy and producing light when an electric current is passed through special diodes.

Solar garden lights have been known to produce a modest amount of light for a short period of time. However, constantly improving technologies allow the lights to shine brighter and longer nowadays.

Advantages of solar garden lights include:

1. Solar garden lights can be easily assembled, installed and relocated if such need arises. All that is needed for the lights to work is the sunshine in the daytime.

2. Solar garden lights are very safe, because they are extremely low voltage lights.

3. Solar garden lights are very energy efficient. They are powered by DC (direct current) electricity, i.e. common batteries being charged by the sun and thus giving electricity for the lights to shine. They allow you to save on electricity and fossil fuel costs.

4. Integrated photo sensors make the lights go on, when there is no sunshine and to go off when the sun is shining, providing ultimate convenience. Most of the solar garden lights are also equipped with an on and off button.

5. Solar garden lights do not produce dangerous environmental pollutants, which is a common thing for other electricity generating utilities.

6. Solar garden lights are compact, fashionable and attractive. They are notorious for creating a special pleasant atmosphere in any garden.

7. Merely four hours of a direct exposure to the sun will provide your garden with up to nine hours of light in the evening. Good solar garden lights are also capable of shining even during the months with limited sunshine, such as autumn and winter.

8. They do not have to be connected to any electric socket and there is no need in electrical wiring. Solar garden lights with no connecting wires can never be damaged by animals.

What to be Aware of When Selecting Solar Garden Lights

1. Make sure that the spike of the lights, which goes into the ground, is either made of a durable plastic or is made of metal.

2. Opt for higher capacity batteries and a larger area of solar cells, to ensure that your lights shine bright, and that they are long lived in the evenings. Make sure to check the feedback from other buyers of this type of solar garden lights in order to select the lights with the desired light intensity.

3. The best solar garden lights should be perfectly weatherproof. Otherwise, if it rains and the water starts to leak into the sealed solar panel, the lights will most likely stop working.

4. You should also try to place your solar garden lights, where there is no shadow cast in your garden. Note that on the overcast days, the lights will not shine for so long and as bright as on bright sunny days.

5. If your lights do not work properly, the most common reasons for that will be: rusty batteries, rusty battery terminals or poor quality of the batteries.

6. It is better to choose solar garden lights with the built in Off/On button for your convenience.

Conclusion

Solar garden lights are a big step forward in the modern technological development. The lights help create a garden with an extremely pleasant and relaxing ambiance, as well as they are cost efficient and environmentally friendly. Solar garden lights are one solution to consider for any garden enthusiast.

Virtually everybody today has a patio of some sort. We all love the look of the new terrace furniture that the manufacturers offer. The sole problem that we may have with it is the cost. Patio furniture can be just as expensive as regular furniture. The most effective way to buy terrace furniture is through a patio furniture clearance sale.

Yes, outlets do offer clearance sales on their terrace furniture and you can save hundreds by buying furniture that is on clearance. The best time to find these sales is generally after summer is over because most outlets do not have the extra room to store large pieces of furniture like this.

you’ll be able to find nearly any piece of terrace furniture that you can think of in a clearance sale every once in a while. From tables and chairs to lounges and end tables made of wicker or metal, you will be capable of finding it. Clearance sales offer you a great deal on the newest brands, styles, and furniture.

You do not must wait to find these clearance sales at your local outlets. You can even find terrace furniture clearance sales on the internet. You may find a wide range of different internet sites that offer sales like these. This is a way to find the exact piece of furniture that you want at a superb great price.

Just perform a search thru your browser for the keywords’patio furniture clearance’ and a lot of results will show up. Although there are lots of sites that offer sales, you may want to search thru all of your options before making any final decisions. Look till you find a site that gives a better deal than another. We all need to get the best possible price on anything that we purchase, so shopping around and comparing costs is the way to do it.

You will be able to view photos of all of the furniture that they have available for clearance sale purchase. You will be able to view a comprehensive outline of the product, as well as the dimensions and anything else that you’re going to have to know. In a few cases, you will be ready to view care instructions. Irrespective of how much money you spend on your new terrace furniture, you’ll desire to make sure that you understand how to look after it correctly so that it will last you for years to come.

Patio furniture clearance sales can also be found all year on the web, unlike at your local retailer. Almost all of the time, in instances like this, the furniture is kept in a warehouse and shipped right from there ; they might be attempting to clear room in the warehouse for next year’s arrivals. Either way, the savings will be passed on to you.

Economize with purchasing your patio furniture on clearance. Ensure that you wait to buy your terrace furniture on clearance at a patio clearance sale.

by Mike Smith

If your lawn is brown and drab, it can be easy to chalk it up to a lack of water or proper fertilization. You might even be convinced that insect pests have infested your yard. However, while all of these scenarios are possible, they’re far less likely than you might think. What your lawn might truly need is aeration. Lawn aeration is nothing more than the process of punching holes (or removing cores) in the soil, in order to allow more water, air and fertilizer into it.

If you find yourself in need of a helping hand with that lawn, aerators can certainly help out and you’ll find quite a few options, as well. Gas-powered lawn aerators are some of the most common solutions. These are also called corers, or plug aerators. Fitted with tines, a gas-powered lawn aerator is motorized, for easy use. These machines will remove cores of turf, ensuring that more air, water and fertilizer reaches the roots of your lawn. However, you’ll find that because these are large machines, they’re better suited for large yards in need of help.

You will also find another option on the market: pull-behind aerators. These are quite similar to the aerators mentioned above, but are designed to be pulled behind a lawnmower, rather than being self-propelled. Usually, you will have to add some extra weight, which can be done by adding bricks or cinder blocks. Finally, as with the devices mentioned above, these are good solutions for large yards.

Yet another option on the market is the push aerator. In form, these resemble old-time push mowers, though they feature a tine-studded drum, rather than mower blades. When you push the aerator across the yard, the tines bite into the turf, giving air, water and fertilizer better access to grass roots. Of course, you might find that these need extra weight added in order to penetrate hard-packed soil, as well.

One interesting device that might work for your aeration needs is a set of lawn aerator shoes, or sandals. These devices affix to your shoes with adjustable straps and the bottom of the shoe features aeration spikes. Simply walk around your yard and let your feet do all the hard work!
